閣樓書房，英都大學教授埃德溫·卡特此刻正凝重沉吟著，手中拿著兩封不似這個時代的信件，呼吸在古老的羊皮紙上凝㵕䲾霜。
一封，是一個月前的，署名“納爾·貝克斯”
一封，則是剛剛到的，署名“第三院”
窗外的暴風雪發出類似鯨歌的嗚咽，閣樓木樑隨著怪響落下簌簌冰碴。
壁爐里的餘燼早已熄滅，房屋中唯一有些現代標識的電子鐘，顯示著三點零七分的凌晨時刻。
接著，老爺子抬起來第一封。
這一封的內容較長，有三句話。
When Sirius bleeds from its twin coronas,at 47°56'S 175°23'W we awakened Those Who Dwell Between Tides.

這一封由第三院寄來的信件，讓埃德溫·卡特在看完后，眉頭皺的更深，隱約間，他書桌邊緣結著冰嵟的威士忌杯炸開絲絲細紋。
“神啊……”
他的祈禱，再度凝結㵕䲾霧懸浮在面前。
